History:
I did this painting during a period of strong influence by Odysseas Elytis (Greek poet, Nobel prize for literature 1979), as well as some influence by Taoist ideas of Ying and Yang. This painting was done quickly, without much thinking, but it reflects what I was contemplating (and living) at the time: I was feeling very much in love, so I tried to depict a vision of a "Union of Opposites", which is not the "Union of Good and Evil" (an idea that always made me skeptical), but simply the "Union of Male and Female". The painting was initially sketched with a light pencil and the lining on the floor was sketched with a felt-tip pen. Finally, acrylics were used to complete the picture. |

Semantics:
This male torso has a male intellect, and female intestines (the "emotional center"). The union of these opposites (of the intellect and the emotions) is also identified (perhaps wrongly, as a matter of fact!) with the "union of male and female". Outside, there is the "Apple of Love", where male and female are already unified. A "cross of resurrection" appears on the right. It has grown wings, and is ready to fly! :-) Meanwhile, strange beings of a "collective consciousness", watch on the left, while they also fly.... Well, I would not paint it again, in this way! First of all, there is some sexism in the idea of "intellect=male, emotion=female"! I found out about this, after my relationsship (at the time) ended, and I felt much more emotional about it than the... girl, who remained coldly intellectual; almost calculative, instead! :-)) |
