"Light at the End of the Tunnel"

History:
This is one of the first oil paintings I did in Greece, after returning from the first six year period that I spent in London. During this phase I wanted to capture inside one painting... almost everything else in the universe. I had no idea that this was a kind of artistic immaturity. I decided to keep this painting and never to sell it. So it still exists today, with only some minor damages (visible in the photograpth, which was taken fairly recently). This painting received much praise from visitors in my one-man exhibition in "New Thought Gallery", Athens, Greece. |

Semantics: This painting depicts a specific vision of a quiite common philosophical and spiritual contradiction, that haunts the spirituality of our species: -On the one hand, a "false metaphysical sun" (the yellow eye, which is also bleeding) deceives human minds into a kind of false reverence, that entails death and destruction, rather than salvation: The kind of false spirituality that centures of barbarism have entailed (Holy Inquisition, etc). This kind of metaphysical light is (of course) false and it causes the burning of Man, instead of "salvation". On the other hand, Planet Earth is in chains, and authentic spirituality in our planet is also in chains. The tiny white arrows point to the true spirituality (green and blue, with ecological connotations of green plants and water),a spirituality which belongs to the smaller human figure beside the chained planet. However, to arrive at this "true spirituality", one must pass through a kind of tunnel, discovering the "True Light" at the the end of this Tunnel. |
