History:
I painted this small picture in the Greek island of Paros,
while on holiday. To do it, I spent several days in the middle of a
narrow street crammed with tourists and local children, asking the same
questions again and again: "Where are you from?" or "Can you also paint
my face", and so on...
After four
days, when I was satisfied that the picture was done, I sold it to a local restaurant.
However, before delivering
it to the client, I made several exact
copies of it, "just in case", and sold three copies almost
immediately. My own (last) copy
was given away recently (in
2002) to
a friend's coffee-house in Saronida (Attika).

Semantics:
This painting depicts a rare church in Paros, Greece,
which has the year "1777"
carved in stone, at the visible corner. I never felt at home within traditional Greek Orthodox
Christianity; knowing about the crimes that were committed by the
Church in medieval times, and so on...
However, there is
something very beautiful
in the architecture of such village churches, built at a time
when tourism was totally unknown,
and people felt a Divine Presence
in their lives.
The church in this painting definitely has a lot of positive vibes,
one way or another (whether you feel Christian or not). So I tried my
best to capture
these vibes, taking the painting home after
selling several copies of it; and the positive vibes seem
to have sold
rather well, as well.
